What's entailed in upgrading my IE browser and how does one backup the

browser?

To upgrade to a later version of IE (8 is recommended), simply go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.aspx and

download/install it. There is no process to "backup" the IE6, per se,

but if you need to, you can simply use the Add/Remove Programs applet to

uninstall the newer version of IE, and IE6 - which is built into WinXP -

will be left.

I decided to see how it compared with ie 6.0 that comes with XP.

Big mistake.

Despite making a restore point, Windows would not let me remove ie

8.0.

I even manually deleted it in Safe Mode and registry references.

When I used Microsoft's IE 6.0 program, it just reinstalled 8.0.

IE is the "heart" of Windows XP. For you to revert back to Version 6,

you need to follow the specific "Uninstall" process.

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage

(only) is available via telephone (based on your locale) and has been

extended until 02 July 2010. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows

Vista in a non-domain environment.

=> US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020

=> Other locales:

https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=13043

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!! =>

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

NB WinXP users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When

you're prepared to install IE8, double-click on the saved file.

NB Vista users: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When

you're prepared to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and select Run

as Administator.

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)

and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before

installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any

anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)

before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a

third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the

Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8. [Do NOT use

System Restore to remove/uninstall IE8; instead, see

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700. Then use the Restore Point prior to

reinstalling IE8 per these recommendations. Norton users will need to see

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html.]

NB WinXP users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then go

to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any

Critical Security Updates offered (i.e., KB978207). If a Root Certificates

update is listed in the Optional Updates category, install it to take full

advantage of IE's enhanced security.

NB Vista users=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then

check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates

offered.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus

application version, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender),

and your third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 before you

decide install it.

I did.

There is absolutely NO excuse for not giving a user the opportunity to

un-install a program.

M.S. continues to have "control issues" which explains their

continuing loss of share in the browser market.

You did something incorrectly, then. It *is* possible to uninstall IE8

(and/or IE7), if done correctly.

In the future, if you plan on doing that or something else that is a bit

involved, post here first for guidance. Many here have already "been

there, done that" and would be happy to offer you assistance.

> I even manually deleted it in Safe Mode and registry references.

That was a big mistake!

> When I used Microsoft's IE 6.0 program, it just reinstalled 8.0.

Unfortunately, you messed something up along the way. I agree that it

would be nice if Microsoft made these things super-easy and foolproof.

The fact of the matter is that certain prep work must be done first.

Again, if you are interested, start a thread to get targeted, specific

advice.

Another tip: Make sure you have an up-to-date image of your hard drive

(using a program like Acronis True Image or even DriveImageXML). This

way you can always "undo" any and all mistakes and return to how things

were before any changes were made. You had the right idea (almost) in

creating a Restore Point before doing something like attempting to

uninstall IE8. However, System Restore has limitations. Had you created

an image of your hard drive instead, all you would have needed to do was

restore the image. Just like using a time machine. :-)

If you had installed and uninstalled the proper way you could

have reverted to version 6. By idiotically manually deleting

stuff you SCREWED UP...don't blame Microsoft. There is nothing

wrong with version 8 so live with it, and learn to use it and

while you are at it educate yourself. There all all kinds of

HELP features in all of the windows versions. Wouldn't hurt to

read them sometime in-between sessions of "manually deleting"

stuff which is just plain dumb.

Doug guess I'm a "nervous nelly" when it comes to d/l etc.. My

interpretation from Bruce was to click on url he supplied and d/l and

install Version 8. I went to add remove panel and didn't find Version 6 so I

don't know where that is. I also found Yaahoo Tool Bar and Ask Tool Bar if I

want to delete them, which I don't. My mystery is where does IE8 show up in

the Add/Remove Panel after I d/l it and execute it. Obviously if I don't

like it I don't see where IE6 is in the Add/Remove panel.

Well, mine shows up as Windows Internet Explorer 8. Perhaps you

didn't look more carefully...its in with the "Ws" alphabetically

in the Add and Remove Panel listings.

If you installed Version 8, it should show up. If you uninstall

Version 8 then Version 6 will return to the listing and Version

8 will not be listed.

Thanks Doug and perhaps I wasn't that clear. I have not d/ld IE8 so

obviously it will not show up in Add/remove Panel listing. That being said,

I do not find

Version 6 showing up anywhere in the Add/Remove Panel. Perhaps it's not

supposed

to and if you d/l IE8, don't like it and remove it via the Add/Remove Panel

then

you will be back to IE6 automatically. Would this be right? Thanks for your

time.

install IE 8, go to the Windows update and get it to protect

yourself.

I did the proper install FIRST.

I am a programmer and am quite knowledgeable.

You should not defend software that does whatever it feels like during

installation.

How would you feel if you hired someone to clean you house and found

when you came home that they had rearranged your furniture and threw

out some stuff?

I love XP,

Do you work for M.S. :-)

Have a great week,
