When I first got my netbook, I got rid of internet explorer because I 'never'

use it. (Generally, I prefer Firefox and Opera. Not a good move, I know now.)

However, I have downloaded it again but I can't seem to get it to run. It

seemed to install fine, the computer restarted. A window popped up asking if

i wanted to use express update or custom update (I chose custom), it all

seemed to be in order. But now I can't find even the ''e'' icon to open it

up! I don't know where to look or how to get IE8 running!... grr... I tried

to 'search' through my program files for 'internet explorer' and for 'ie8'

and had no luck. I am running Windows XP HE2002 SP3 with Kaspersky Anti-Virus

(if that makes a difference... though I haven't had any trouble with any

other downloaded programs...). Any help or advice would be muchly

appreciated! I am thoroughly frustrated!

Search for iexplore.exe. It should be here:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Look for iexplore.

Right-click, hover over "Send To", click "Desktop (create shortcut)".

Since IE is a deeply interwined part of XP, how exactly did you "get

rid" of it?!

Assuming there is no damage, all you need to do is run the .reg file

(Line 408, right column) from Kelly's website:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

For some kooky reason, SP3 gets rid of the uesful special IE desktop

icon. The above fix places it back.

If you would rather do this on your own, manually:

1. Click Start, Run.

2. Type regedit.exe.

3. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel

(wrapped for easy reading)

Note: If HideDesktopIcons and NewStartPanel do not exist, create new

registry keys for them.

4. In the right hand pane, double-click

{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} key.

If the registry value name does not exist, create a new DWORD value and

name it as {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

5. Enter dword value data as 0 to enable the Internet Explorer icon on

the Desktop.

For users who are using Classic Start Menu, replace NewStartPanel with

ClassicStartMenu instead so that the registry key location is as follow:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\

Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu (wrapped for easy reading)

Other steps are exactly the same with the above. Refresh the desktop

after change to display the IE desktop icon (just right-click on an

empty space on the desktop and select Refresh).

(the above from:

http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/res...rnet-explorer-desktop-icon-in-windows-xp-sp3/ )
