Importing photos from a USB to the Photos App. Started yesterday and I still see the message "we are loading your items. This may take a few minutes."

I start the process yesterday around 9am and its now 10pm the following day. I see some of the pictures but it is still showing loading. It shows that there are 72,657 photos. The total space is ~195GB. I have NO idea how many photos there are but could it legitimately be taking this long? At what point should I just cancel this?
