If I have a school account and that account is deleted what happens to files and documents saved to desktop folders?

My school Microsoft 365 account will be deleted and I am wondering what will happen to the documents and files created by that account saved to my personal computer? I do not need to access them to edit them just to copy information over to other documents. Also, many of these documents still seem to be updating to the school account. How do I know that these files are truly safe and saved to my computer and, if the files are not safe the way they are, what ways can I make them safe for the future?
