IE8 Locking Up w/ PDF File

OK, I know this sounds weird but it just started and I have been able to

replicate the problem several times, on several different web pages. For the

record, I tested with FireFox and do not experience the problem.

http://www.saintpaulsumc.com/women_reading.htm has two links to the same pdf

file: http://www.saintpaulsumc.com/docs/umwreading2010.pdf One of them is

at the top of the page: and one of them is in the

4th paragraph: 2010 Reading List I manage the website for this church.

Either of the links works fine for me if it is the first link that I open.

If I close the pdf window and then click on the other link, the new window

in IE8 locks up and my only exit is thru Task Manager. I found that if I

clean out the browser's temp files, history, cookies between clicking on the

two links, everything works fine. I was able to duplicate the problem on

other websites, including pdf files that are not my files, so I don't think

it's a PDF file issue. I've checked for IE updates and I'm up to date. I've

also tried rebooting but still have the problem. The problem does not occur

with FireFox, so I assume it's not a PDF Reader bug. Any ideas what's going

on?

Thanks for your help,

JW

"The problem does not occur with FireFox, so I assume it's not a PDF

Reader bug."

That is an incorrect assumption.

And I have no trouble opening PDFs on my copy of IE 8.

I can not reproduce your problem here on any machine using Windows XP SP3,

IE6, IE7, or IE8, and Adobe Reader 9.3 on all machines.

What PDF reader are you using?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your PDF reader?

Good luck,

What's the name and version of your PDF reader (e.g., Adobe Reader v8.1;

Adobe Acrobat v7.1)?

Did the problem start immediately after installing KB978207?

Thanks for all the responses. I asked a few other folks to check and it

seems like it's strictly my pc's problem. I also fired up my laptop which is

pretty much running parallel applications, and no problem with it. PaBear,

you asked lots of questions! Here are a few answers...

I'm running Adobe Reader 9.3.0, and ESET Smart Security 4.0. Computer was

ordered w/o anti-virus software so Norton or McAfee has never been

installed. Ad-Aware 8.1.4 is also installed. Looks like I installed IE8 in

7/09, so ESET and some version of Ad-Aware was probably running in the

background at that time. Regardless, I am sure this is a recent problem. No

way the problem has existed since original IE8 install.

It looks like KB978207 has been installed about 10 days. It's hard to know

if the problem started then. I think I would have seen it sooner, but it's

hard to know for sure.

AHA!!! The problem goes away in No Add-ons mode! When I click on "Manage

add-ons" I was blown away by the number of items listed, with most of them

belonging to MS or Sun. Any guesses at a good place to start disabling??

I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 but haven't taken that leap

yet. Is "Reset IE Advanced Settings" different from "Reset IE Settings"? I

could not find any reference to advanced settings.

Anything here point toward an answer, or do I just start troubleshooting

add-ons??

Thanks again,

JW

No, they're the same thing. [I shoulda snipped that second, Win7-specific

link. My bad.]

Though a tad outdated,

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx offers some tips on

Add-ons (applies to IE7 & IE8 in all Windows versions).

There are two ways to go about it: Disabling Add-ons one-by-one (closing IE

after disabling each one) until you find the miscreant. Or doing a Reset &

then re-enabling each Add-on one-by-one (closing IE after disabling each

one) until you find the miscreant.

As Adobe (Reader) is involved here, you might wanna start by disabling

(related) Adobe Add-ons (e.g., updaters) but YMMV.

IE8 Locking Up w/ PDF File - !!SUCCESS!!

Just a quick note to report back on a successful fix, and to thank PA Bear

and everyone for their suggestions...

After the problem disappeared when running in NO Add-ons mode, I decided to

take a shot at selectively disabling add-ons. To shorten a considerably

longer story, the problem turned out to be related to the Google ToolBar,

which I run primarily for the PageRank button. I've run the Google ToolBar

for quite awhile without problems, but when I got to looking closer, I

noticed two new buttons that had appeared recently without catching my

attention - "Share" and "Sidewiki". When I disabled the "Share" button, the

problem was immediately eliminated. Don't know why, don't really care, just

relieved it was that simple. I ended up disabling both of the new buttons,

and life is, once again, good.
