I don't know of any way to get them to close. This is one my irritants to
using IE8. I'm like you
when I want to save a new link in a folder, the whole list of folders and
subfolders open up
and I have to scroll up and down to get to where I want to put it. I keep
hoping in IE9 they
will correct this.

When I open Favorites drop-down menu and click on one of the folders to get
to the desired website, that expanded folder stays expanded, with all
submenus open. So when I try to open another folder in Favorites I need to
scroll all over the Favorites menu to find it (because the first folder, if
it has a lot of bookmarks in it, will fill up the whole drop-down menu), and
then even that second folder will stay expanded, and so on.
One way of avoiding this mess is to click on the expanded folder again in
order for it to retract. But it is not convenient. In IE7 there was a way to
make the retraction of the opened folders AUTOMATIC once the second folder
was clicked upon. However, I cannot find that command in the Internet
Options
on IE8. Please advise. Thank you.
