I've been getting an annoying message for some time now when I first start my

computer (it appears early on, when the desktop and toolbar are first

loading). It looks like this: Windows Internet Explorer

X Cannot find 'file:///'. Make sure the path or

Internet address is

correct.

It doesn't seem to be causing any trouble, but I have to delete it every

time I start my computer. Any ideas? Thanks

Analyze what else is starting when you start your computer.

Unfortunately, you didn't tell us what version of Windows you are using.

Here are instructions for Windows XP:

Look in the Startup tab of the System Configuration Utility [Start > Run

> msconfig ] and the Startup folder in your Start menu [Start > All

Programs > Startup ]

And just why would an instance of Internet Explorer be loading on Windows

startup (AND your login) unless *you* created a startup item that loads IE?

If you did not add IE as a startup item (in the Startup group or Run

registry key) then you should be suspicious as to why it is getting loaded

when you log into your Windows account. Use msconfig.exe or SysInternals'

AutoRuns to check your startup list.

So, did you recently uninstall some malware? Often the removal of malware

leaves behind remnants. The malware might not be there anymore but some of

its effects may be.

Thanks!!

Hey Folks, I found the answer on Computing.net where there is a discussion

thread about exactly the same topic. Apparently Comcast's Universal Installer

is the culprit. The thread suggested that it be uninstalled from the Control

Panel rather than turning it off in the startup tab of msconfig. Anyway, i

uninstalled Comcast universal Installer, and , "presto!", no more error

message. Think I'm gonna sign off now and give Comcast a piece o' my mind

right now!

Hi Pete,

We have had a few posts about their toolbar also. You may like to check with

their support also if they are recommending an update also.

Regards.

Hi Rob,

I have sent a message to Comcast about this issue. I will post their

response when I hear back from them.

Okay, so here is what Comcast wrote back to me,

"Thank you for contacting Comcast Email Support. My name is Amelito and I

understand you want to know about our Universal Installer program. I can

certainly understand the importance and inconvenience of this matter and I

can understand how you feel. Rest assured that your concern will be taken

cared of.

As of this moment some features of our Comcast services may or may not work

with Internet Explorer 8. I would suggest that you switch to a lower version

of Internet Explorer to be able to use your installer program. I do apologize

for the inconvenience."

Some fix! If I hear back from them with anything more concrete, I'll post it.

And your reason for installing ANY software from Comcast would be? Why do

you need any software from Comcast? I've been using Comcast for many years

and have NEVER needed any of their software. They wanted to push some

software on my host used for automatic provisioning of their cable modem but

I wouldn't install that crap. I just called in to tech support and told

them to provision it (after giving them the MAC address). The software is

to eliminate customer or field tech calls for provisioning the cable modem.

I wasn't interested in lowering their call volume. No software is needed

from Comcast to use their ISP services or to provision the cable modem.

By the way, there already exist a newsgroup and forum specific to Comcast,

which are:

newsgroup: alt.online-service.comcast

forum: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/comcast

Hi Pete,

It looks like a canned response... It is very hard to distill an answer to

written questions when you are not looking over someone's' shoulder. Also

like a Govt. dept. it is hard to get a straight answer from large companies.

Who knows where Comcast have their call center. The lines of communication

between their Support ppl and developers are probably non-existent.

I would not worry about it... just if you have any more problems with IE8,

then test by running in noAddons mode. The Comcast toolbar (if installed)

will be a likely candidate.

mmm... there are some issues with it.. http://www.comcast.net/toolbar3/

It is using Google Search services and Instant Email alerts..... perhaps it

would work with IE8 better if you place *.google.com and *.comcast.net in

your Trusted Sites Zone.

Regards.

You are absolutely correct, I don't need this stuff at all. It got installed

when I signed up for Comcasts TV/Voice/Internet services bundle. I have

dumped it and all is well now.

Hi Rob,

Yeah, I got responses from three different "Customer Service Specialists".

The grammer and syntax of their responses were, well, suspect? :) Anyway,

thanks for your input and suggestions. As soon as i have a ton of time on my

hands I may try them out. Right now, I have dumped the culprit and things are

just fine, so I may just let that sleeping tiger lie.

Peter
