I have a new dell comptuter with windows 7 and initially IE 8 worked fine.

One day i was editing via IE 8 to a Drupal (content management) server, and

the screen flashed, I think i hit some key but it seemed more like the effect

of a quick power outage. Two problems now occur but only on the website i was

editing. Going to the website shows less that is really on the site

(confirmed by looking via Firefox), and i can no longer edit Drupal (the

symptom is that part of a menu shows suggesting it thinks i am still logged

in, but i cannot do anything and the type between attempts is several days).

I was going to reinstall IE 8 but i cannot find a verson on the MS site -

only for vista. It should be the same, and since IE 8 comes with windows 7,

maybe this is ok. I did not want to take the risk of trying such a reinstall

without advice, so that is why i am writing. I assume the reinstall would

retain all my tabs/favorites.

The only way to reinstall IE8 in Win7 is by reinstalling Win7 and I don't

think you need to do that just yet.

Start here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-Internet-Explorer

(which includes a reference to

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Reset-Internet-Explorer-settings).

Are you running Win7 64-bit and do you see the behavior in IE8 32-bit and

IE8 64-bit?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your

subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?

What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the

computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought

it)?

Thank you for the quick reply.

1. I tried the reset IE settings, and that did not do anything.

2. The problem occurs on both 64 and 32 bit versions (including no changes

after doing #1).

3. I had McAfee when the computer came, and i deleted it. I use MS Defneder

and MS firewall. But, these changes were made over a week before the IE

problem came up.

New information.

I have two users (me as regular and me as administrator). I had been using

regular. Tonuight I logged into administrator. Both the 64 bit and 32 bit

versions of IE worked perfectly. So it looks like the problem is not with IE

but something else that affected a single user.

Curiosity question.

On the start menu there is IE (64 bit) and IE. On the task bar (bottom of

screen) there is an IE icon (auto installed). This one seems is 32 bit (by

looking at "about" on the help menu). Why wouldn't 64 be the default on the

task bar. Is there any difference in the two verions, in a practical sense.

Hi Roger,

Go to Drupal, Press F12 to display the Developer Tool, Press Alt+8 to toggle

the Document Mode back to IE8 Standards (the site default)

Looks like you pressed Alt+7 or 6 instead of Shift+7 or 6 and forgot to

mention that you had the Developer tool visible when the issue occurred. It

has its own keyboard shortcuts which will over-ride the current page's. Good

idea to not display it while you are using an on-line editor.

The Flash you saw was the page refreshing when the Document Mode was

changed. Flattering that IE8 can refresh the page in a Flash....

mmm. You should not be inserting those Shift+numeric key characters into a

html snippet ( !@#$%^&*) they are special characters... (ref:

http://www.concordancesoftware.co.uk/manual/hs2655.htm )

So obviously you pressed Alt+7 i/o Shift+7 to insert an & character... use

& instead or does the online Drupal html editor correct your mistakes

for you. No way Jose... more junk to feed the masses.

Regards.

Did you also download/run the McAfee removal tool?

Windows Defender is not an anti-virus application. Are you telling me that

you do NOT have one installed?

Rob, i pfressed F12 for the Drupal developer tool (I had never been in that

tool, so the notes you had on possible impact of being in that and pressing a

wrong key combination didn't occur). When i got inito the developer tool, it

was already set for IE as the default for both browser mode and document

mode. The problem still exists.

The key points:

1. I was in Drupal when the problem occurred. Even if i reboot the comptuer,

when i try to log into the Drupal site, it appears the commadn bar (very top

is where i have the choices), only shows "skip to main content" (but that is

not a command i recall ever seeing). So, it apparently thinks i am still

logged in. The browser works fine in logging into other sites.

2. the problen onlhy occurs when i am logged is a a regular user; when i log

in as administrator the browser goes to drupal and works fine)

PA Bear, sorry i used an old term (microsoft defender), i meant to say

Microsoft Security Essentials.
