'upgraded' to IE8 recently, ISP also 'upgraded' download speed (to > 8 MBps)

since then connection is going downhill

Internet Explorer sometimes very fast, then it starts to hang when clicking

on a link to open a page

sometimes only recourse is to close IE and start again, works most times but

sometimes page won't load at all..

Unfortunately same prob also with Firefox, Chrome, though in diminished

amount

tried already most of the ususal remedies

any bright ideas are wellcome

You have tried "most of the usual remedies". Which "remedies"

have you tried?

You haven't told us which ISP you are using. BT Internet,

perhaps?

What is your operating system - Win XP, Vista, Win 7 etc (plus

version details and any service packs)?

What Internet security are you using - Virus protection,

Firewall, any other (such as Spybot Search & Destroy)?

Your symptoms might be caused by network congestion or other

connection problems - and have nothing to do with IE8, Firefox or

Chrome. Does the time of day make any difference? In some

areas of the UK, the Internet becomes unusable when the children

come home from school and again, in the early evening.

Have you run a speed test? You could try www.speedtest.net,

www.dslzoneuk.net and/or www.thinkbroadband.com - at different

times of the day.

If you are using a router, it might help, if you re-boot the

router. If you have a wireless router, there might be a problem

with your wireless connection. Disable the wireless connection

and try a wired connection between your computer and the

computer.

Also, try clearing your temporary Internet Files.

On a separate point, it is inadvisable to quote your email

address on public newsgroups.
