IE 8 and Adobe Reader / Acrobat problem

Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 Standard Edition SP (Build 3790) server which

experiences problem with the combination of IE 8 and Adobe Reader (9.3.1

w/update).

When executing AR I get the following error:

AcroRd32.exe - Ordinal not found

The ordinal 120 could not be located in the dynamic link library

iertutil.dll (Fileversion 8.0.6001.18702)

The server have the following recent patches installed:

KB976325, 971961, 976662, 978207.

I've tried to reinstall Adobe Reader - no success

Uninstalled IE8 and used IE7 - Success!

But I need IE8 to work

Any suggestions ?

You might want to give the KB978207 patch a go, this has iertutil.dll

version 8.0.6001.18876 which is a little newer than the one you have. It's

possible that Adobe Reader is compiled statically against a different than

you're running (I'm using 9.3.1 with updates on XP SP3 with IE8 using

iertutil.dll 8.0.6001.18876 and don't see the error you're seeing) which is

why it's throwing an error about a missing ordinal.

Any reason why you don't have any service packs install for Windows 2003?

Build 3790 is the RTM release, Service Pack 2 has been out for 3 years!

as listed in the Dependency Walker output. I'll try to install

I've checked the Adobe forums and FAQ's but I havent found any information

resembling this error. I really think this is an OS or IE8 related error.

When I uninstalled IE8 and used IE7, the error messages disappeared.

Reinstalling IE8 made the errors come back again. In Add/Remove programs

several IE7 patches remain listed. Should I uninstall these patches? I've

disabled Trend Server Protect service when uninstalling/installing patches

and IE8...

Personally I think this is an Adobe issue - they appear to be statically

linking to a DLL rather than dynamically linking, so if that DLL happens to

be slightly different across patches then their Reader software breaks down.

They may well be trying to reference a function call that is no longer

present in the IE8 DLL, or that is not present in the Windows 2003 version

of the file.
