I want to use my wireless headphones with an external mic problem

I have a computer with a combo mic/speaker plug. I want to use my wireless headphones with an external mic. The problem is that when I plug in the microphone plug with an adapter the sound is muted going to my wireless headphones. I wish they would still make computers with a separate mic and headphone jacks. Is there a device that would allow me to just connect the mic or would I have to buy a usb wired mic.
