In another thread I detailed my problems getting my scanner to work
properly in Vista without disabling UAC. Anyway, Canon says I should
have installed my scanner using the administrator account:

"Thank you for your inquiry. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

Are you installing the scanner under the main "Administrator" account
Accounts with Administrative privileges do not count. You will need to
log directly into the Administrator account and reinstall.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we
can be of any further assistance with your LiDE 30.

Huh? do they mean I have to enable the hidden user account so there
hardware will work correctly

I would think you'd be able to accomplish this by installing with elevated
privileges. Right click the setup file and select "Run As Administrator."

Hi,

Not exactly, they mean that you should enable Administrator account only to
install drivers but it should work on every account .... but ...

I agree with Michael - install drivers with evelated mode.

Thanks, no joy. Canon says:

"Based on your description, it sounds as if UAC is the cause of your
troubles. If you are logged in as the administrator already then there
is no need to be using UAC. User Account Control in Windows Vista makes
it possible for organizations to deploy a more manageable and secure
desktop in which administrators (on a network) can run as standard users
(formerly users) for certain programs and still perform administrative
tasks. I recommend you disable User Account Control."

To which I responded :
Ah, I think I see the disconnect. I am not connected to any domain nor
is this PC on a shared network. While it is true that there is an
administrator account with elevated privileges available when Vista is
part of a network or Domain, a stand alone PC does not have a dedicated
administrator account separate from that of the primary user. In lieu
of that Microsoft suggests right-clicking the driver install program and
selecting the "run as administrator" option. Although I have done this
with the Canon driver, it still is not visible to Acrobat with UAC
turned on. Oddly, my Canon 20D EOS is visible to all Adobe programs
whether UAC is turned on or off. This leads me to conclude that the
scanner driver is at fault.

Does my response seem reasonable and correct? thanks
