I need to update a user’s AD account that had a name change due to an issue syncing with our MDM. What would be the best practice for updating this?

I am still new to using some features of AD and was only given a crash course when I came into my position. User changed last names a few years ago but the admin at the time only edited the profile in AD. They edited the email address and users name, then made the new email address the primary and the old email address as the alias. We are updating phones and the user attempted to enroll the new phone into our MDM, but the MDM portal has the old username which was the old email address. They attempted to use both their old and new emails to enroll but it did not work. I updated some attributes
