I lost data from my HDD after temperorily connecting my backup HDD

Experts please help me.I came across a very strange incident. I have a 2TB Seagate Barracuda Compute connected in my HP Z4 Desktop. I have been using it for almost an year. Almost 6 months ago, I had created a backup of the data from this hard disk to a 500 GB old HDD taken from one of my old laptops. Today, I reconnected this backup HDD to check for some old files. Strangely, after disconnecting the backup HDD and reconnecting my 2TB hard disk, I encountered with a Check Disk screen and after booting, all the files in the 2TB hard disk has gone except the data I have backup in the old 500 GB.
