I have a HEIC converter on my PC, how do I convert my photos to JPEG from HEIC, when I clinic on a photo it will say file not supported

I am transferring my photos from my Iphone 15 to my PC. When I look at my pictures it will be blank and when I click it, I get the message the HEIC file is not supported. I have purchased a HEIC file converter, I thought it would convert the photos automatically, Under setting-under photos do I need to make JPEG a default.?
