I have a black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top left corner

I have a black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top left corner.Multiple restarts do not boot the system.I occasionally see the BIOS info page, for a microsec, then I see the flashing underscore.How do I recover the boot up process?
