I got an alarm telling me to call a particular number immediately. I think it’s scam. How can I tell?

I was using the computer when I auddenly was interrupted by a screaming alarm and couldn’t budge it. Nothing moved. I called the number on the screen but don’t trust that this was really Microsoft and hung up. Is this scam?
