I can't arrive at Windows Update

I click to go to windows update and the window opens that begins the check
of one's computer...

"Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating
software for use with the website.

The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the software
your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make sure the
control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it or allowing it
to run."

Once this page opens, that's it. No message of any type. It just sits
there until I close it down. Any thoughts? Thanks!
 
Hello JR,

This will probably not be your solution but it is easy and can't hurt to try.

Please execute this 4 steps

1.- Please confirm your system clock and Time Zone also the Date set
properly,
Having it set incorrectly can cause this type of behavior.
-
2.- Test this WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working and
a new Validation tool
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/
-
3.- Suggest cleaning up the system (clearing out all the Temp/Tmp folders,
and included all offline content, clearing the browser TIF, Delete Cookies ,
do a Disk CleanUp.

Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in
the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

4.- You didn't say, or at least it's not clear, whether you tried getting
the updates using Internet Explorer, by going here:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Some new ActiveX software has to be installed on XP before your computer can
be scanned. Just follow the prompts to do so, but it should then list and
download the same updates, and install them, as those you see in the taskbar
notification. If going to the site is successful, keep going back until there
are no more critical updates to install.

Yep, looks like where I uninstalled IE7 and now attempting to reinstall it,
activeX is giving me a problem. When using the diagnostic panel for the
below, the window it is showing for the above bar looks like the one in
IE7... i.e, the favorite stars in alignment. anyway, I failed the last 3
items. If scripting is turned on; If images display correctly; If the
System Date and Time are relatively correct; If cookies are enabled; If
the Microsoft Genuine Advantage ActiveX controls load correctly; If the
Microsoft Genuine Advantage ActiveX controls are able to successfully
connect to the validation servers

Passed Active scripting allowed; Passed Display images enabled; Passed
Computer time and date correct; Passed Cookies enabled; Passed ActiveX
enabled

Failed Windows validation ActiveX loaded; Failed Office validation ActiveX
loaded; Failed Validation Self-help ActiveX loaded

In my original post, in trying to get to windows update page, the data I
supplied is what I get when using that Windows Update URL. Also, running a
clean machine as far as temps, IE temps, cookies, adware, spyware, though
either avg or zone alarm may be creating a problem. Will repost when find a
solution. Regards
 
Thanks. I tried the d/l and install of windows update and afterwards, when
it went through the 'install' phase, a popup stated "Install is not needed
since Windows Updates is already installed". Will keep after it. Regards
 
Add the /wuforce switch to the end of the run command, and then click OK. For example, the
run command may appear as the following:
C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

TaurArian, can't do it. When I attempt to add the /wuforce to end of it, a
popup tells me that the slash / plus other symbols, cannot be added to the
end of a file. It wouldn't let me change it. Regards
 
Try:
"C:\downloads\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce
Put the file in a folder called downloads on the C drive.

folder in C windows. I then tried to add the /wuforce and again it is
rejected. The only method I know of to add something like that is
rightclicking the file, and using the 'rename' method. If there's another
way, toss it at me. :) thanks. regards

Follow Mow's instructions re adding the wuforce command.

You do not need to redownload the WUA again.

Make sure you have added the quoting signs and spaces:
"C:\downloads\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

You may like to copy the entire line above and paste it into "Run" in the
Start menu. Hit the [Enter] key afterwards.

Freudi, I copied and pasted the line
"C:\downloads\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce and got this in return.

RED X - C:\downloads refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be
on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that
the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or
your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the
information might have been moved to a different location.

You've copied the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe into a folder named
"Downloads" which is sitting on drive c:, did you?

Yes Sir,

I can open WE, navigate down the tree to a folder named My Updates and
Windows Update Agent30 -x86.exe is sitting there, resting in peace. When I
click and run it, it goes through the motions of installing. When it is
completed, this message: "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent
is already installed" Can't do no more than that. Thanks and guess we can
close this post. Appreciate your efforts to help. Regards

command to enter under Run in the Startmenu would look like
"C:\My Updates\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Note the quoting signs around the path and the blank after the closing
quote in front of parameter /wuforce.

I'm aware that this post is no longer monitored but I did wish to let you
know that after I was able to install the Windows Update Agent, I am now
able to use Windows Updates. That one item there, did the trick... For
