I can't activate Windows on my laptop

I received a laptop from a friend, who reset the laptop to factory settings and reinstalled Windows and set up the system under my name. However, my system keeps insisting that Windows needs to be activated, but when I use the installed product key, it refuses to accept it. It states that the key or the license are no longer valid. The laptop in question was originally Win 8.1 RTM before it was upgraded to Windows 10. The current product key is different from the OEM key, which I have also tried. I think the currentkey is a retail key, but I'm not sure. What's the next step I can tak
