I am having a problem when it comes to the start menu.

Ok I have a question. Be patient with me, I'm rubbish with computers. But I am having a problem when it comes to the start menu. Every time I go to open the start menu, it opens and before I can do anything it immediately closes. I've tried touching the start icon with the mouse and also tried using the start key on the keyboard, the same thing happens every time.I haven't been able to close the computer by using it for months now.
