HP18 AI1-PC Windows 8

My laptop died & a friend loaned me her mom's HP18 & my wifi network doesn't list in available networks. All my neighbors show up, but not mine. I contacted my internet provider and they said, "Oh, looks like your router/modem is outdated, we'll send a newer, advanced version & once connected it should fix the problem."Well, I got it & it didn't fix anything. My network still doesn't show. I went through all the steps but I must be missing something. OR is it because it's running Windows 8?
