HP Laserjet 1200 printing fault

My HP Laserjet 1200 printer has developed a faintly smudged vertical 8mm wide line from top to bottom just clipping the first letter in every line. Changing to a new cartridge makes no difference as does following the manuals cleaning the print path advice. Do I have a serious problem and just scrap it after have just purchased a new cartridge ? I am a reasonably competent diy bod. Georgie boy.
