hp laptop with Windows 7 the Startup Repair showing attempting repairs and not going any further

When switched on the laptop after that, the Normal start up option was selected as default option but it did not start up and shut down itself after a minute or so. On the second time to switch it on, it recommended to use the Startup Repair so this option was used. The Startup Repair started running.The Startup Repair got to the point “Attempting repairs…” and has been stuck at this stage for over 2 hours. The Cancel button is enabled.
