How to make CDs of MP3s

I'm not sure if I'm asking in the right place so if there is a better place,

please redirect me and accept my apology for being here....



I would like to make a CD of MP3 tunes for a friend that she can play both

on her computer and a fairly old stereo but I've never done that before and

I'm not sure of the basic rules.



She has a few CDs of MP3s that she has been given in the past and I had her

check them to see if they had any folders and, if so, how many levels of

folders she had. She told me that there were no folders whatever, just a

number of MP3 files in the root directory.



Is it strictly necessary that I not have any directories if making such a

CD? It would be more convenient if I could have a high-level folder for each

artist with sub-folders for each album by that artist. Then again, if it

keeps the CD from playing on her stereo, that would be a deal-breaker and it

would be better to just put all of the MP3s in the root directory.



By the way, I'm using Nero 6 to burn disks and I assume it is reasonable to

simply choose the Audio/Make MP3 Disc options. Is that right or would it be

better to use "Make a Data Disc" and then add the files, either with or

without folders?

If you want to make a Audio disk (e.g. one like music cd you buy in a store)

that's playable in any cd player (car, old walkman etc.) then choose Audio

in Nero and not any other option.



Note - must be a blank CD for this (e.g mimic original store bought music

cd). Also note that a true music cd doesn't have any folders, Windows just

shows a number of CDA files. Some music disks do have extra content intended

for pc's, e.g. videos of group etc.) which also shows up as files and/or a

folder. In general the files are simply support files to play the videos and

usually are not needed as the pc already has Quicktime (or whatever) already

installed.



Nero will convert the mp3's as required. Note Audio disks are limited to

approx 80 min of music although many older players have trouble past the 72

min mark (legacy of original disks at 650 megs rather than 700 megs).



If instead you make an MP3 disk you are essentially making a Data disk with

mp3's on it. Playable on a pc and also on most but not all modern standalone

DVD players. Nice way to go if you have the gear as you can then also use a

DVD instead of a CD. Benefit is a CD holds approx 150 tunes (at 128KPS) but

a DVD will hold approx 1000. Some DVD players even will play a Dual Layer

DVD . For example my little portable DVD player will so I have one dual

layer DVD for it holds approx 2000 tunes on the one disk.

Rhino, if you choose to make an mp3 disk it is almost sure that

it won't play on the old stereo player but will play on the

computer. You can put a pile of mp3s on a CD.



If you make an mp3 disk to play in your newer (2009-2010) CD

player in your car/truck/van, one can burn well over a hundred

(depending on size and quality) and continuous play for over

five hours on one CD.



If you want the CD to play on both, record as an AUDIO disk.

Nero will convert the mp3s to wave files when it burns. Since

wave files are much larger, you will be able to add to the list

and burn about 12 to 22 mp3s (depending on size) to each

CD...there is a bar on Nero showing the disc capacity and how

close you are to the maximum as you add to the burn list for

the audio disk (at least it does on my Nero 9). Best read the

help for Nero before you start.

Some CD Players will not play MP3 files but based on

the info from your friend...hers will. So...create a Data

CD and add the MP3 files. (FWIW...not all MP3 players

will recognize a folder structure so it may be best to add

the MP3s to the root directory of the CD)



You can burn many more MP3s on a Data disk because

the only limits are file size as opposed to an Audio (music)

CD which would be limited by duration.
