How To Keep Headings Collapsed in Word

I am have many problems with Word (Office 365), specifically with the usage of headings to organize a document.I am setting up a document for planning my semester for teaching. Each unit has its own heading (3 units as of now), and within each unit, there are 15 lessons each with their own heading to expand/collapse. Each lesson has a table with several areas left blank to fill out. There are less than 5000 words in the entire document as it is just the template.I can open and close about a dozen headings upon every fresh start before Word starts to bug out and freeze.
