How to get the Win key + (.) Period emoticons to work again.

Several months back I lost the ability to use Win(key)+(period) for emotions almost anywhere I can type. Oh, the emoticons come up for sure. But when I click on them they are not places into where the cursor is blinking. Used to work just great. Does anyone have a clue. And thanks if you do and have time to reveal the fix.
