How to get photos from phone to windows 11 via USB, without phone link

I plug in my phone to my Windows 11 laptop via USB, and tell it to allow transfering data. Yet, the device is not visible in file explorer. I had to install a program called phone link, and it is very cumbersome to use, and has security problems (requires access to my ms account, exposes my phone to that account).How to transfer files with file explorer only?This worked in Windows 10, now it is broken.
