How to fix "A disk read error occurred" on my toshiba satellite l30 running windows Xp

Hi , I have a toshiba satellite L30 laptop that runs windows Xp Home , it was given to me by a family member , I've turned it on and was welcomed by an error message saying "A Disk Read Error Occurred" I've checked the ram , and hard drive but both are plugged in properly, I can access the BIOs easily , I don't have a boot disc for the laptop but only the laptop it self , I don't need any data on the laptop so I've tried to factory reset it using all methods (F8 and 0) , none works , all it dose is keeps beeping loud for as long as I hold down F8 or 0 keys to open boot menu , when I release th
