How to download my photos from my phone to an external hard drive to free up space?

I have a Moto-G,, an Asus with Windows 10, installed. I am trying to download photos off of my phone to an external hard drive. Please explain how to do this. I have already uninstalled microsoft photos because it absolutely sucks. I just want MY photos from my phone to be saved to my external hard drive. I do not want them in any cloud. They are my photos that I took with the Phone I paid for. Why, Why in the F is this so F'n hard. I have been trying for three days and cannot figure it out and now I am out of space on my phone. I am so incredibly angry. I cannot even download google photos
