How to de-link desktop and documents folder from one drive without deleting original

my one drive folder is backing up my desktop and and documents, how do i safely delink them without deleting items, and or having desktop disappear. my sync app has an error, that sends me to website, so i can't unlink it in app, since my account is over limit, ( ideleted in the cloud ';but the effects wont update)
