how to correct my display being too big for my monitor -

I have set up a second monitor and successfully linked it to my laptop as an extended screen. However the second monitor (a Dell Screen with Aspect Ratio of 1280:1024) doesn't show all of the screen. I seem to be unable to attach an image of the error so will try to describe the issue: when a window is maximised, such as Microsoft Bing, I am unable to see the top tab menu, the task bar is partially obscured and the text in the display is slightly warped. This makes using this screen unnecessarily difficult. I have tried to use the setting/system/display/display resolution to try all option
