How does onedrive actually work?

Tell me if I'm wrong but to me the common sense way onedrive should work is as follows: Files I create or download to my computer remain on my computer (this should be common sense). I should then be able to choose specific folders to back up to the cloud automatically. Done. Instead you have this ridiculously convoluted trash heap that tries to back up everything in your photos and documents and if you tell it not to do so, it just deletes them, because they were never really on your computer to begin with. This doesn't provide a useful service it just prevents you from using your PC in the w
