How do you ACTUALLY change the background colors on the window that you have to input...

It is a simple question but the standard fix does not work. I want to be able to change the background color of my window. The one that I have to type information in. More specifically, I cannot determine where a selection box or a scroll bar begins because there is not an out line differentiating where one window begins and the other window ends. I tried going through Control Panel ->Personalization->Window Color , made my selections and saved the theme after I applied it. When I go into a window like the one I am typing in now, the screen is blank (all white) and I do not see anything that I am typing in. (I went back to put it on a different theme just to type this, but the black and white setting is upsetting to my eyes).

I am working in Windows 7 (64 bit) Ultimate edition. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you.
