How do I stop the login screen going back to my closed laptop screen after locking it when it is connected to an external monitor?

When at my desk I run a dock and external monitors and leave the laptop with the lid closed. I have the power settings set up to allow the laptop to run with the lid closed when plugged in. When I lock the machine and then come back, the lock screen is appearing on the closed laptop even though that screen is not functioning otherwise and I have to open the laptop and close it again for the display to return to just the external monitors. Can this be fixed? I have not had a problem with other laptops on Windows 10.
