How do I set Windows 11 to automatically download and install updates?

I suppose I've misunderstood the function of toggling ON the "get the latest updates as soon as they're available" option: thinking that any updates would be downloaded and installed automatically. When I checked several days later, there was a long list of updates, none of which had been downloaded or installed yet. How do I set Windows 11 to automatically download and install updates? (BTW, the active hours adjust automatically.)Thank you
