how do I open Microsoft Defender on Windows 10

I have Windows 10 Home edition on my computer ( I just upgraded it from Windows 8.1) I installed McAfee Total Protection for viruses but I need malware protection. Windows 10 shows it has Microsoft Defender which I believe is a Malware program but it is in the off position and I cannot get it to turn on. Any ideas of how to get this to turn on? is it because it doesn't want to play nice with my McAfee program that I installed? If so, I don't get it -McAfee is for virus protection and Defender is for malware correct?
