How do I fix "Windows Installer Not Responding"?

I am trying install the program Graph Pad Prism on my new Windows computer. The file will download, but when I click "open file," I get the small window that says, "preparing to install," and then it freezes with the message on the top of the window, "not responding." This is always as far as I get when trying to install the program. I then have to restart my computer for the window to go away. I have tried this at least 15 times by now and the same thing always happens. I'm not sure if the model of the computer matters, but it is an Acer, Intel Core, I7.
