How do I add my kid's email address to my account

[Windows 10]

My eight year old got a new laptop today so we started setting it up and it was easy. At the end it said that we need to enter the code that was sent to my son's new email address. The problem is, that I can't add his email address to my gmail. Nothing seems to work and without the code he can't use his laptop. I wish I could just restart the laptop sign up and used my account instead.
