How can I use my own business's email address as my primary alias?

I need to change my Microsoft account email from the email of my old business (25 years old, now defunct) to the email of my newer business (10 years old) but Microsoft says I cannot use my work email for my Microsoft account. But the old email was a work account! As a small business owner, all is work. So what gives? Take out an email account that I'll never use, just to get rid of a defunct email address? Why can't I use the address of my choosing?
