How can I revert back to my original file explorer display without having to access my downloads folder through Internet Explorer?

I emptied my recycle bin & when I reopened my file explorer the display is blank & all my files are still accessible, but when I click on a folder to access it a green bar loads but doesn't finish processing. When I open Internet Explorer to access my downloads folder my file explorer pops up normally as it did before I emptied my recycling bin. Is there any way to revert back to my original file explorer display without having to access my downloads folder through Internet Explorer?
