How can I prevent hardware from being uninstalled automatically from XP?

I have some old mini DV tapes which I wish to copy and edit. I downloaded Canon installation media on an old, of-line PC runninng XL (I have previously ruined the firewire output of four other cameras with Windows 10). The installation seemed to work OK but when I start to capture video using either Windows Media or Video Capture the hardware is automatically uninstalled. If I deleted the uninstaller from the camera software file should it solve the problem, or is there another method?
