How can I install Acrobat Reader DC

I have a perpetual license for Adobe Acrobat X Pro installed on my computer. It is old, but it allows me to create and edit pdf files. I attempted to install Acrobat Reader from the downloaded Acrobat Reader installation file and it refused to install unless I remove my existing Acrobat X Pro app, which I am loathe to do because Adobe would then force me to buy a new annual license if I wanted to edit pdf files. Is there any way around Adobe's greed?
