How can I find the BitLocker recovery key so that I can save it externally

I had my computer freeze and required a BitLocker recovery key to unlock it. Since I was unable to find it, I had to reset the computer and lose some data. I'd like to prevent this in the future by saving the recovery key externally on a USB drive, as well as printing it on paper. But I can't find the key. The instructions that I've read say to type BitLocker in the start menu search box--nothing; typed manage bitlocker into settings--nothing. Opened my Microsoft account--it said it doesn't have a key. Does anyone know how to find the key?!
