How can I find if an uninvited program has downloaded?

Ever since Friday, my computer has gotten sluggish all of a sudden. There are lags in any and all of the games I play, it's taking long to open programs I uses on a daily basis and long to close programs. I ran a virus scan which came up clean. I know on older versions of Windows there was a straight forward way to find this out..but now if I look in task Manager Details or Services, I really don't know what should and should not be running.ThanksEileen
