Since there have been lots of things learned about installing SP3, can

someone *point me to*

(1) the best information for getting ready for the install.

(2) information to follow when things don't go right.

Not sure if I have the correct Microsoft instructions (getting ready to

install) (what not to do) (how to get out of a jam) etc.

I could be described as a power user of software apps, but I'm not familiar

with hardware-drivers, etc. I may have to do my own install.

Turn off your anti-virus and any anti-spyware programs such as Windows

Defender. If you use a third party firewall, disable it and turn on the

Windows Firewall in the Control Panel for the installation. Once SP3 is in

and working, you can enable the third party firewall and turn of the

Windows Firewall. Do not keep both running.

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3:

Bruce, I'm pretty sure the period for free support for XP SP3 issues is

over. If you click on the above link, it resolves to this one:

http://support.microsoft.com/select/Default.aspx?target=assistance

If you drill down, eventually the only "free" support available (for XP

SP3 installation issues) is via the "Community Answers" contact method.

YW.

Thanks, Bruce. I've looked it all over and need to sit down and make a few

notes, and read everything again. This is a much better collection of help

files than the ones I read during the first panic phase When SP3 first came

out.

One more reference for you: Extended Support for WinXP SP2 ends on 10 July

2010. After that date, computers running WinXP SP2 will NOT be offered any

further critical security updates, Automatic Updates will not work, and

Windows Update website will not be accessible until SP3 is installed.

Yes, I had read that and was looking for that date yesterday and hadn't

found it. I know it is an extended date, but thought it was a little later

than that, so Thanks. I was all ready to do SP3 from the beginning, but

there was that bugaboo about the AMD processor (which I have) but by the

time I found it only had to do with a couple of OEM computers, the support

time had run out. This time, I notice most of the help material to install

SP3 is more organized - less cluttered.

Maybe by the time XP, itself runs out, Windows 7 and all our peripherals and

drivers will all match.

You folks who spend your time helping us are to be commended.

I can quite authoritatively tell you that you don't need a doctorate to

install SP3. You don't also need to read any documents to install it.

SP3 contains mainly hotfixes and security patches that were released since

the SP2 date.

Go ahead and install SP3 because it is always uninstllable if you don't like

it.

Now that you have corrected a pig, you will be branded a TROLL by Pig-Bear.

Nobody is allowed to correct a pig. Pigs are members of the Society of

Pigs, an elite group specialising in insulting, abusing and ridiculing

Microsoft customers.

Baloney. I do neither and still I have no problems. the only thing one

needs to do is to make sure they are not online and this can be achieved by

unplugging the cable from the computer or switching off the wireless

connection.

Apart from that DON'T DO ANYTHING AS SUGGESTED ABOVE. It is a recipe for

disaster.

Error message after you upgrade a computer that uses a processor other than

an Intel processor to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or to Windows XP Service

Pack 3: "STOP: 0x0000007E"

ANONYMOUS, that is precisely what you specialize in-----insults, abuse and
