Headset mic not working (audio splitter)

I recently bought an audio splitter cus my laptop only has 1 jack but my headphones use 1 for sound 1 for microphone but when I plugged it in my laptop didnt recognize the microphone and its continuing to use the built in microphone.Does someone know a way to fix?Laptop is hp pavilion gaming laptop
