Haven't been able to update Windows for 5 years.

I am unable to update windows. Any attempt on restart tells me to try again, trouble shooting will feedback an issue but unable to fix it. Scans and fixes in the CMD find problems but haven't been able to fix them. If specific details are needed I'm open to attempt sorts of fixes and scans as I've exhausted everything I could find short of a physical technician. While I don't know the problem I know this all started back when I was rooting around in files I shouldn't have been trying to get some foreign software to work.
