I have been trying to get Windows 7 to download and apply some updates after reloading my laptop from scratch. If I load MS System Center before SP1, System Center hogs all resources and the laptop does nothing.

If I load SP1 right after installing Windows 7, SP1 takes 8 hours, with TrustedInstaller taking all resources and SPINST barely getting any resources, even though updates are turned off. One finished, checking for updates has taken two days so far and still nothing. I have an instance of SVCHOST that takes between 1.5 GB to 2.5 GB, like it's intentionally using resources to keep updates from running.

Last year, I successfully reloaded Win7 on over 50 laptops, as I support computers at a local middle school, so this is not something new to me. I also have been loading OS on midrange and personal computers, including Windows, Linux, and Mac, for about 20 years.

If this is Microsoft's way of forcing Win10 upgrades by shutting off updates to Win7, I'll be looking at Linux or Mac.

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1520, with 4 GB RAM, a Dual Core 2 GHz CPU, and a 500GB HDD. Been running Win7 on it just fine for a few years, just reloaded because HDD failed.

I have also tried loading various KB patches as suggested by other posts, but it does the same thing, just using all resources while doing nothing.
