"Group by" option missing from Windows Explorer

I am trying to get rid of grouping in Windows Explorer (both by data and alphabetically (A-H; i-P, etc.)The standard advice is to go to the View menu, and choose the "Group by" option. But that doesn't appear to exist on my machine. Is there a way to activate this option, or a Windows-based workaround? I don't want to use 3rd-party software to do this.
