graphics on external monitor stretched if laptop lid not closed in Win11

Acer Nitro 17 laptop/Nitro ED340CU monitorWith the laptop lid open and the external monitor set to 'recommended' settings, the ext monitor image is stretched.If I close the laptop lid, the external monitor changes to non-stretched.I updated the nVidia driver.I reset the monitor.I escalated to 2nd tier Acer support, but I have no confidence.Any ideas?
